I am Kazusan, a Tokyo resident who is not very good at English.
When I went to Hakone recently, I was surprised by the number of foreign tourists there, so I thought I would like to write an article for foreign tourists.
I'm not very good at English, so I'm writing with the help of translation software.
I would be happy if even one of you found it helpful.
- Even foreign travelers won't have trouble finding food at Hakone Kowakien Hotel

- Hakone Kowakien Hotel: A safe place for international travelers to stay
Even foreign travelers won't have trouble finding food at Hakone Kowakien Hotel
Japanese food has been popular recently, hasn't it?
Ramen, sushi, tempura, okonomiyaki, wagyu beef, etc. are popular.
It seems that some people have planned a trip to Japan just to eat Japanese food.
I'm proud to be Japanese, but on the other hand, the popular Japanese food is not what Japanese people think of.
Vegetables mixed with vinegar, simmered dishes with soy sauce, sesame and vegetable salad, simmered fish wrapped in kelp, miso soup, etc. are what Japanese people think of as Japanese food.
And the food served at hot spring inns is like this.
Even for Japanese people, there are many dishes that children don't like, and there are also cases where there is no food they can eat.
Because it is a course meal, you cannot choose freely.
Therefore, when thinking about staying at a hot spring inn, the biggest problem is the food. However, I noticed when I stayed at Hakone Kowakien Hotel recently that there was no worry about not being able to eat food at this hotel.
I would like to recommend this hotel to overseas travelers who would like to stay at a hot spring at least once, so I decided to write this article.
uffet style where you can choose your favorite dishes
Hakone Kowakien Hotel is unusual among hot spring lodgings in that it serves buffets for both breakfast and dinner.
There are over 60 different dishes on offer, including typical Japanese cuisine, dishes you might find at a hot spring inn, and even international cuisine.
Examples
- Steak
- Garlic rice
- Eel with rice
- Fish sashimi
- Pork shabu-shabu (boiled meat)
- Homemade pizza
- Chicken curry
- Fried shrimp
- Kushikatsu (deep-fried pork)
- Miso soup with mushrooms
- Fried eggplant and mushroom
- marinade Sanma
- bruschetta Jellyfish and cucumber in vinegar
- Chicken teriyaki (grilled in soy sauce)
- Matsutake chawanmushi (a dish made by mixing eggs, dashi, and ingredients and steaming them)
- Pumpkin potage
- Bouillabaisse
- Japanese-style mushroom pasta
- Mapo tofu
- Shrimp and avocado with mayonnaise
If you've never tried a dish before, you probably can't guess what it is just by hearing the name, but if it's a buffet, you can judge it by looking at it.
You can try just a small amount and then eat more if it tastes good.
As for the sushi, the chef will make it right in front of you, so you can eat it fresh.
There are only a few types of toppings, but it's delicious.
The ramen is also served in small portions, so it's easy to eat.
With this variety of dishes, it's unlikely that children from overseas will have a hard time finding something they can eat. In addition, there is all-you-can-drink alcoholic drinks and juices. Tea, etc.
Let me introduce you to my breakfast
Breakfast was also a buffet.
I love the typical Japanese-style breakfast at hot spring inns, but the Western-style breakfast buffet looked delicious, so I ended up having one like this.
The black bread sandwich had roast beef and avocado.
It was delicious.
The dish on the top left is curry. Morning curry is the best!!
The hotel staff can speak English
When I stayed there, there were a ton of tourists from overseas carrying large suitcases.
The staff served us using a very Japanese-like English, although they seemed unfamiliar with it.
The whole hotel had a welcoming attitude towards tourists from overseas.
Just renovated and so beautiful
Apparently it was recently renovated, and it has a very calming atmosphere with a wood motif.
See, it has a great atmosphere, doesn't it?
At night, the fire flickers.
Seriously, I could look at it forever.
You can see the bar in the back.
In front is the lobby space that anyone can use.
Thorough rationalization
It seemed like there were not many employees.
But that doesn't mean the service was lacking due to a lack of manpower.
I think they've thought about thorough rationalization.
There was no one in the lobby.
They didn't show me to my room or carry my luggage.
Instead, there were a lot of carts to carry luggage.
Well, that's not really a problem.
The welcome drinks were also self-service.
It was all-you-can-drink here.
Rationalization with all-you-can-drink alcohol
It was a dinner buffet, but all the alcohol was all-you-can-drink.
There was an automatic server for draft beer, as well as wine (red, white, sparkling), highballs, chuhai, shochu, hot sake (fully automatic), and more. Every type of alcohol was available.
Of course, non-alcoholic juice was also all-you-can-drink.
The usual machines were installed.
It was a generous gesture, but in return there were no employees at all.
By dividing the start time into two, the person who guides people to their seats and the person who clears and sets up the dishes could both be in charge.
The venue can accommodate dozens of people, but there seem to be only a few employees.
And yet there was no sense of lack of service, and the all-you-can-drink alcohol created an image of good service. I can only say it was magnificent.
Hakone Kowakien Hotel: A safe place for international travelers to stay
Unless you're interested in traditional Japanese-style hot spring inns, I think a place like Hakone Kowakien Hotel is a good choice, especially for first-time travelers from overseas.
You'll be able to experience Japanese culture and have a nice stay without feeling too confused.
I hope this information will be helpful to someone.
